Achieving Excellence with the Incredible Power of Enthusiasm

One of the most incredibly powerful tools which we can use in all aspects of our life is enthusiasm.

  • Enthusiasm is a state of mind.

  • Enthusiasm inspires.

  • Enthusiasm stimulates

  • Enthusiasm motivates action to the specific task at hand.

Enthusiasm is contagious to the point where the person who is genuinely enthusiastic attracts and stimulates enthusiasm in all with whom he/she comes in contact.

Napoleon Hill (The Law of Success, Success Unlimited Inc, 1979) draws an analogy which compares enthusiasm to the relationship which steam (or perhaps in 2003 diesel) has to the locomotive. It is the vital moving force that impels action. The greatest leaders are those who know how to inspire enthusiasm in their followers.

When we make a conscious effort to develop and sustain enthusiasm work never seems hard, boring or monotonous.

Like the power generated via the diesel fuel in a locomotive enthusiasm can be harvested and directed specifically to all our activities, be they work or leisure related.

Like all attributes enthusiasm can be developed to a point where we will begin to realise that we can never really quantify its unlimited power in terms of the achievements we accomplish.

Think of your own situations for a moment. How do you feel when you encounter a totally enthusiastic person? Their enthusiasm is contagious and once caught needs to be passed along.

When you begin each day with a spirit of enthusiasm your attitude will be totally positive and your thoughts will enhance your self belief which in turn will guide your actions and these in turn will generate only positive and powerful results.

Many of you will parents. Make absolutely certain you share the gift of enthusiasm with your children. It is a priceless gift they will thank you for many times over. It was Bruce Barton who said “ If you can give your son or daughter only one gift, let it be enthusiasm”.

Enthusiasm is a vital element toward the individual success of every man or woman.

Effective leaders have long appreciated the incredible power of enthusiasm and have ignited hope, action and victory by its skilful application. Enthusiasm is essential. You can’t light a fire with a wet match.

  • Enthusiasm gives you the power to get moving at the beginning of the day even when you are not naturally a morning person.

  • Enthusiasm gives you the tenacity and persistence necessary to see a task through to completion.

  • Enthusiasm under girds your feelings of doubt and stimulates the "guts" to take risks. It combats fear and worry.

  • Enthusiasm gives personality a new "brilliance".

  • Enthusiasm is the key difference between champions and mediocrity..

  • Enthusiasm is the burning desire, the passion that is reflected in commitment, determination, and spirit. It conveys to others that you are totally committed to what you are doing and that you are genuinely motivated.

  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude are the winning ingredients for success.

Adapted from "Attitude is Everything", Keith Harrell, Harper Business, 2003

Every memorable act in the history of the world is a triumph of enthusiasm. Nothing great was ever achieved without it because it gives any challenge or any occupation, no mater how frightening or difficult, a new meaning. Without enthusiasm you are doomed to a life of mediocrity but with it you can accomplish miracles.  Og Mandino.

Enthusiasm Sells

Back in the days of ancient Greece, smart people thought enthusiasm was a gift from the gods.

Anyone who had enthusiasm was imbued with special powers. That is not far from the truth.
How often have we seen someone take on a challenge we thought was one shot in a million, then they achieved it through sheer determination and enthusiasm?  "I didn't have enough experience to know I could fail," they say later.

Enthusiasm sells.  Dale Carnegie told of a speaker who was promoting an idea that was absolutely preposterous.  No one in the room would normally have believed such an idea, except the speaker had enthusiasm.  More than half the audience never questioned his authority.

Try to focus your work on products, services, and ideas you feel positive about.  Also look for prospects who are very likely get real benefit from what you sell.  Then enthusiastically go about showing prospects how you can help them.  Sales almost always follow.

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Characteristics of Enthusiastic People

1) Enthusiastic people RADIATE ENERGY. The #1 characteristic of enthusiastic people is their ability to radiate positive energy. When these people walk into a room, heads turn and people gather. Their smile lights up a room. Also referred to as charisma, their power comes from within. If you want more energy, make sure you're giving your body and brain the best nutrition you can.

2) Enthusiastic people are CURIOUS AND INTERESTED in life. They ask a lot of questions and explore what interests them. They love learning and live in a state of wonder, surprise, and delight

3) Enthusiastic people FOCUS ON THE GOOD (even when things are bad). They emphasise what they can do rather than what they can't do. They look for the gift in difficulties and live life with gratitude.

4) Enthusiastic people FEEL DEEPLY AND LAUGH OFTEN. Laughter helps them keep things in perspective and just as they are open to joy, they also allow tears. They show compassion for life's difficulties and use humour to help themselves and others through tough times.

5) Enthusiastic people DO SOMETHING THEY LOVE every day, no matter how small. They are passionate about their work, hobbies, craft, or the sports they play and it shows.

6) Enthusiastic people SERVE A GREATER PURPOSE than themselves. They have a desire to help others and build community. They are naturally drawn to share their enthusiasm with others

Enthusiasm is an attitude of mind. We are what we think so we need to think in positive terms and to reflect those positive attitudes in a spirit of sustained enthusiasm.
